Is there really a secret to growing back your edges? Or making your hair thick?
I was at a baby shower over the weekend, and a woman asked me how does she get her hair to be thick again? And, how does she go about growing back her edges? Well, there’s no short answer for that y’all. There are so many hair growth serums, potions, and elixirs out there that swear they can grow your hair break, and restore your edges. The truth is, there’s so much more to growing your hair, that some folks just don’t want to share. People are in the market primarily to sell their products. And, unfortunately, for many years, women with curly, kinky hair did not have an array of healthy, or organic options to choose from. Resulting in over chemical processing, traction alopecia, heat damage, lack of vital nutrients in the body, low intake of water, over usage of sulfates, and Parabens etc.
Let me just break it down. When you want to grow your hair, and, you are serious about it. You will take an overall interest in your health as well. Listen, I am not a doctor, nor am I a licensed cosmetologist (in-progress). However, I am an expert in what has worked for me, and I think there is something special about info sharing. We can all learn from others’ trials, tribulations, set-backs, triumphs, and discoveries. Now, what I have learned is that you need to be mindful of what you’re putting in your body. As women age, we also loose a lot of nutrients over the years. And, if you’ve had children you tend to loose essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients even faster. Living in the world we live in today, we may not be getting the proper amount of sun exposure, calcium intake, vitamin C etc. That said, two of the main things I think we need to do, is take a multi-vitamin, and collagen. I prefer to take prenatal pills. I’ve been taking them since my college years, and they have not failed me. And, no, they do not make you extra fertile. I also take a Vitamin D pill consisting of 2000 International Units or (IU’s) and I take Collagen Peptides. I will provide links below to some of my favorite vitamins. Of course, you should “do what works for you”. Not every pill is made for everyone. And, I would recommend checking in with your primary Healthcare Physician before getting into any type of vitamin routine. You want to make sure you are not allergic to anything, or that your body can allow to process certain vitamins, minerals etc. I know when I first began taking prenatal’s they made me constipated. It was a lot of iron for my body to process. So, instead of taking prenatal pills everyday, I took them once every other day.
I would recommend checking to see if you have any Vitamin D deficiencies. Quick story: At one point, my sister was suffering from hair fall, and shedding. Her skin was a bit pale. She went to the doctor and found out that she had very low vitamin D levels. Once he prescribed her Vitamin D with probably an increase in IU’s, she quickly saw results. Her hair stopped shedding, her nails were growing strong, and her skin regained color.
There are other things to consider while trying to grow your hair. Make sure you are not suffering from traction alopecia, or psoriasis or any other skin issues. You may need to meet with a dermatologist to be sure. Your hair follicles could be impacted in some way, or simply not able to grow back on their own due to damage and you require further treatment.
If this is not the case, your health is in order, and you have no real skin issues. You also have visible hair in thinning areas, that still have hair follicles….meaning, it’s not smooth to the touch. Then, you can by all means use natural hair oils, elixirs, growth stimulators to grow your hair back. Someone posted on IG, that hair oils do not moisturize the hair and they only act as sealants. Well, I’m here to tell you that that is simply not true. There are plenty of nourishing, penetrating, moisturizing organic hair oils that absorb into the scalp and offer omega 3, fatty acids, vitamin E etc., to help nourish your hair from the inside out. You can also go on YouTube and learn more about the L.O.C Method, or L.C.O Method on your how to moisturize and seal your hair. Matter of fact, I just hot-oil treated my hair with my Golden Drops, and mixed with the heat, and the type of oil blend I use, the oils were soaking into my hair as if I wet my hair. I put on a plastic cap….well, two plastic caps, a scarf and a beanie to trap the heat.
I’ve said all this to say, there are things you can do to grow your edges back, or make your hair thick and strong. However, it absolutely starts from within. Think of it like this…you want to work from the inside out. I hope some of my thoughts have encouraged you to do some more research, and figure out what works best for you.
